Books I Read In February 2022

Hello everyone! How are you? I hope you’re doing well.

The end of the month means another ‘Books I Read in…’ post so here it is.

DISCLAIMER: May include SPOILERS! Read at your own risk! I am not trying to claims any of these books of my own. All rights go to the authors.

1) ‘It Ends With Us’ by Colleen Hoover.

Trigger Warnings: Abuse. 16+

Sometimes the one who who loves you is the one who hurts you the most. Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the the small town in Maine where she grew up – she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan – her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

I think this book sends a very important message that should definitely by delivered and received. However, I suggest you read the trigger warnings as there are sensitive subjects. I didn’t really trust Ryle from the start. It was obvious to me that he would turn out the way he did. Some moments I really liked him as a character and thought ‘you know what, maybe he’s not that bad?’ But then he would do something and I’d completely hate him again. I love Atlas. He has my heart! He was the person I wanted Lily to get with since reading her Ellen Degeneres letters. He was the best/only person I could see her with. I feel like the end of the book was a little rushed and I wish it would have been more prolonged so we could see how it worked out between Lily and Ryle and Lily and Atlas (if you’ve read the book, you’ll understand why. If not then I won’t spoil it for you). Since I’m lucky enough to not have been in the situations this book centres around, I found it hard to relate to the book but I could empathise/sympathise with Lily and her mother and what they went through, both together and individually. Not a bad read but I was expecting the ending to be better given the hype around the book!

2) ‘Baby Be Mine’ by Paige Toon.

‘He’s not mine, is he?’ That’t the question I fear the most. You see, I have a secret. My son is not fathered by my boyfriend, but by one of the most famous people that ever lived. And he doesn’t even know it. Meg is terrified. She lives in the South of France with her doting boyfriend Christian and their beautiful son Barney who has just turned one. Life should be idyllic. But she is living a lie – a lie that will turn their lives upside down and inside out. Because, as every day goes by, Meg’s son looks less and less like Christian. How much longer can she keep her devastating secret from him, from their friends and family, from Barney? How much longer before the whole world realises that the father of her child is none other than Johnny Jefferson, wild boy of rock, constantly in the headlines, constantly in the headlines, constantly in Meg’s thoughts?

To be honest, I’m a bit disappointed. I really enjoyed this books prequel, Johnny Be Good, and so was expecting big things from this book. I didn’t bond with this book quite as much as I expected too and found that I wasn’t enjoying it given that I felt like I was making myself read it. My rating was going to be three stars but I bumped it up to 4 because the ending was sweet and there were some small moments in the book which made my heart burst with emotion however I feel like this book had so much more potential to go in different directions to what it did.

3) ‘You’re The One That I Want’ by Giovanna Fletcher.

Maddy, dressed in white, stands at the back of the church. At the end of the aisle is Rob – the man she’s about to marry. Next to Rob is Ben – best man and the best friend any two people ever had. And that’s the problem. Because if it wasn’t Rob waiting for her at the altar, there’s a strong chance it would be Ben. Loyal and sensitive, Ben has always kept his feelings to himself, but if he turned round and told Maddy she was making a mistake, would she listen? And would he be right? Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Ben and Rob thought their bond was unbreakable. But love changes everything. Maddy has a choice to make but will she choose wisely? Her heart, and the hearts of the two best men she knows, depened on it…

A tale of unrequited love that I was highly anticipating and so was rather disappointed once having read it. I found Ben’s constant pining for Maddy rather annoying. As I’ve said it is a tale of unrequited love so some pining was to be expected but it felt too much in this book. Though I felt for all characters throughout this book, I couldn’t help but feel a bit put off. I enjoyed the part with Maddy and Rob in Paris towards the end of the book (I don’t want to spoil it for you but if you’ve read it or plan to read it you’ll find out why), it thought it was a cute trip and it was one of the only parts of the book that made my heart do cartwheeels. However, the soft tone of the epilogue gave the book a calm and heart-warming ending.
